| 03.15.06: MORRISSEY, KRISTEEN YOUNG, DEAN & BRITTA
Ringleader of The Tormentors continued with post production work until the middle of December. Some tracks needed tweaking, but I was back home in NYC and Morrissey was still in Rome. We tweaked by e-mails. Emily Lazar of The Lodge masterfully mastered the album, but had to go back to the drawing board three times at our request. We think something must have gone right, because the initial reaction from Moz fans and press has been wonderful. I listen to my white label all the time! Look for the CD release on April 4th, on Moz's Attack label through Sanctuary. KRISTEEN YOUNG...
I spent January and some of February recording the latest Kristeen Young album at James Iha's Stratosphere Sound Studios, with Mario McNulty engineering the basic live tracks and Rud Lee Cullers assisting. The CD was mixed by myself at Studio B, Looking Glass Studios. Kristeen and drummer Jeff White wanted to sound powerful and raw, the way they sound live, for this one.
We made a promotional video of three songs which can be seen on her site www.kristeenyoung.com and agreed that the next album should sound that way. As hard as it is to believe, the video performances are 100% live, no overdubs or miming to track took place. We always had this great sound under our noses but we used to think we needed guitars, bass and glam dust sprinkled all over the music. Well, we didn't do any of that on the new album, tentatively entitled The Orphans (which also could be the group's new name). Kristeen has told me that she's very proud of this one. And, you know what? So am I! We are looking for a release in May. DEAN WAREHAM & BRITTA PHILLIPS...
We started the new album in March. I can't believe it was three years ago when we recorded their last CD, L'Avventura. The latest batch of songs are, of course, romantic and heartfelt (and they make my eyes a little dewy -- but it's just a physiological thing, nothing to worry about). Matt Johnson is playing drums again and the studio is chock full of guitars, basses and amps. Recently I was pleased to see the charming and sensitive film The Squid and The Whale, not only because I loved it, but also because Dean and Britta wrote and played most of the incidental music in the film.
