JULY 09, 2005: BITS AND PIECES

Tony Visconti and Kashmir, up on the roof.

Born To Boogie, the reissued T. Rex film, entered the British DVD charts at no. 1, I couldn't ask for anything better. It entered most European charts in the top 5 and top 10. My biggest surprise was when it entered the USA DVD charts at no. 16, unprecedented because T. Rex had only one major hit in the USA, "Bang A Gong (Get It On)". But there has always been a loyal T. Rex following here, among fans and musicians alike. I always said that there is a little bit of T. Rex in every rock group in the world. Marc Bolan had inspired so many people to pick up a guitar and join a band. Sanctuary Records had a debut party in my home town of New York where I spoke before the film was shown, with a Q & A session afterwards. It was great fun! A new friend, Mark Regan, threw a special party at the Crobar Club in NYC for T. Rex fans and I was invited to attend. Fans came from as far away as Great Britain, Sweden and Vancouver, Canada. We spent a lovely evening just watching the DVD that contained the concert alone ("We've seen the film a thousand times, we just want to see the concert now"). It was very refreshing to see just that. With five and a half hours of program material, I honestly haven't seen the entire contents of the two DVD set yet. I'm waiting for a weekend off!

Most of April was spent moving house back to Manhattan -- where I belong! I lost 8 lbs. in the process, just packing and unpacking and assembling furniture.

I spent part of May and all of June remixing new releases by Trapt and Fefe Dobson in the 5.1 surround sound format. Folks, this format ain't going away and record companies have realized that lots of people already have a home theater set up that can also play surround sound music discs. I personally love this format, music sounds great coming from all sides -- it's breathtaking. I also mixed David Bowie's Young Americans album in 5.1 earlier this year and it will be available very soon. Even the original stereo mixes have been re-mastered and sound amazingly good, better than ever, in fact!

As I write this I am currently entertaining four great friends from Copenhagen, Kashmir, who are in New York City mixing the album we started in March. We are mastering the album with the legendary George Marino of Sterling Sound at the end of July. Then it will be time for a couple of weeks of R & R (not Rock and Roll, I've been doing plenty of that -- the other R & R).

Hey, if you're in NYC on any Monday between now and August 1st, try to catch Kristeen Young (kristeenyoung.com) at the Delancey @ 9 PM. I'll be there, for sure. She's playing with her drummer, Baby Jeff, and they're playing some new songs they worked out when they were in London in May.

Have a great summer, to those of you in the northern hemisphere (to my Australian and New Zealand friends, keep warm).
