APRIL 03, 2005: FADERS DOWN!
Last night I pulled the faders down for the last time at Sun Studios (for now, that is). Kashmir (click for link) has completed recording their new album with me in a record 35 days (not counting preproduction). I nervously sat at the back of the control room as we listened to a rough cut of the album. We never had time to even take rough mixes away and this was our first continuous listening session. On the last day, we recorded little things like extra guitars, keyboards and backing vocals, so some of the sounds we were hearing were just hours old. I can tell you it sticks together well. We're going to take a break because of other commitments and we will all assemble again in the near future to mix the album. I have no idea when a release is planned but it will probably be no sooner than September. Mixing will take place in New York. I am extremely pleased with the way things have turned out.
We worked a six-day week and took Sundays off. The drawback to that was that Copenhagen is closed on Sundays for shopping (except for restaurants and grocery stores). So I spent my days off walking and walking and walking. One Sunday I walked from Vesterbro, up to the Zoo in Fredricksberg then all the way in the opposite direction to see the Little Mermaid, probably an 8 mile journey. Sometimes I was joined by Mario McNulty, but his late Saturday night activities (mainly of the elbow bending kind) made him a late riser on Sunday mornings. Still, Mario and I would join up Sunday evenings for a great meal at Sticks and Sushi, a small chain of Japanese restaurants that serve little sticks with tasty snacks that are grilled and a large variety of sushi. The decor is beautiful, fresh and aimed at a young crowd. I wish we had Sticks and Sushi in New York (see, you can't get everything in New York). I am flying back to New York as I write this. I will never forget these wonderful 35 days and I would go back to Copenhagen in a heartbeat to work there again.
