>> TYRANNOSAURUS REX :: BEARD OF STARS

A sad period, in that Steve Peregrine Took was ousted from the group due to "musical differences", according to the press. The differences were that Marc wouldn't have a song penned by Steve on the albums. When Steve became insistent, Marc just fired him.

June Bolan, Marc's wife, phoned and told me about the incident and immediately added that Marc had a new partner, Mickey Finn. She said he was better-looking than Steve, and that when she saw photos of Marc and Mickey together she got a buzz she never got when she saw Marc and Steve together. I loved Steve's zany work on the albums and I really couldn't conceive of him being replaced. Months after the split Steve would still come around to my place and I'd help him make demos, but nothing came of it.

Mickey was instantly likable, but I could see he wasn't as inventive as Steve. He did look the part better, I have to admit. So we went into the studio and recorded the last Tyrannosaurus Rex album, which was mainly Marc doing a solo thing with light accompaniment by Mickey. Mickey's backing vocals weren't strong, so Marc would double-track them with his own voice for reinforcement. It wasn't a bad album though.
